Night Listeners, This week I am in the KFMG studios with studio manger Gary Monte interviewing filmmaker Jack Meggers about his life in Mason City during the grunge era of the 90s. We play his band Ming's Daughter as well as fellow northern Iowa bands Todd's Neat Futons and Sorry Excuse. Jack left Iowa for fifteen years and returned in 2014 where he was reintroduced to Iowa's music scene. He brings on a handful of tracks that have inspired in creatively since returning to the state. Night listeners of 98.9FM KFMG - October is finally here! If you have been listening to the show for a while, you know that I drop a lot of samples from movies at the beginning of episodes. Most of them come from horror films like Return of the Living Dead , Trick Or Treat (the one with Gene Simmons), and whatever else one might be sitting in my office when I am working on the show. Horrors movies always seemed to go hand in hand with punk rock and metal for me. Anyways tonight I dug out a tape from this super obscure artist named Sky Carrasco. I purchased her cassette, Dark Pines , several years ago from Record Collector in Iowa City. Her music is made up of violin, ukulele, and drums. I highly recommend checking it out. On the heavy side of things, I got some CR Dicks, X-Ray Mary, and an old-school punk jack from Mister Clean. Night Listeners of 98.9FM KFMG - Tonight I cracked open the show with one of my favorite tracks from self-titled LP by The Horrors, "Back in the Cut". The riff on this song gives me goosebumps everytime I jam it. I introduce a few new bands into the mix including Mold, The Twelve Canons and Anthon Worden. A few tracks on tonight's program are of lower quality then we are used to playing. One of them imparticular, is a track by The Problems, one of Ed Nehring's many musical projects dating back to 1979. Night Listeners of 98.9FM KFMG - It's September and it is our tenth week on air. Who could have imagined I could keep this up for this long? Most of my friends can't, but that's OK. This week I have Luke Dickens on the program who recently opened the doors to his own record shop in the Beaverdale neighborhood in Des Moines called Vinyl Cup . Luke brings a playlist of tunes that I have never played on the show before. I felt like the odd man out as he and studio manager Gary Monte connected on their mutual love for Catfish Keith. Luke's choices are a breath of fresh air, although I disagree with him on the idea that William Elliot Whitmore is underappreciated... especially among his lady fans. So to offset his playlist I spin some tracks from Captain Three Leg, Broken Ones, and Fetal Pig.
